Stand Up Paddle in Bora Bora
The slowest way to see the lagoon, and arguably the best. Glass-flat water at dawn, coral gardens underneath, and eagle rays that pass without noticing you.

When to go
Early. The lagoon is at its flattest between roughly seven and ten in the morning, in any season, and that is when the water is clearest and the light is best. By midday the wind has put texture on the surface, which makes paddling work rather than pleasure, and hides what is underneath you.
What you will see
Coral gardens in water shallow enough to read from the board, small reef fish, and with an early start, eagle rays and blacktip reef sharks. Neither pays you the slightest attention, which is unnerving once and addictive afterwards.
Do you need experience?
No. Flat water and a wide board make the first attempt straightforward for almost everyone, and balance arrives within minutes rather than sessions. It is the gentlest way to spend an hour on this lagoon.
